1. What are dietary fibers?

The term "dietary fibers" refers to various food components that cannot be broken down or are not completely broken down by the body's own enzymes in the human small intestine and reach the large intestine either undigested or not completely digested. The term "roughage" is also used for dietary fibers.

2. Why does the body need dietary fibers?

Dietary fibers have a number of effects on the body, especially on digestion. For example, they influence how long food stays in the gastrointestinal tract and how well nutrients are absorbed. Dietary fibers ensure a healthy stool consistency and make you feel full – all without calories. They also help to regulate blood sugar and cholesterol levels and to maintain weight.

3. Where do dietary fibers occur naturally?

Dietary fibers occur almost exclusively in plants in their natural form. There, they are mainly found in cell walls and serve as structural and supporting substances. They do not occur at all in animal foods.

4. Which of these foods contains particularly many dietary fibers?

Whether bread, pear or bell pepper – they all provide plenty of dietary fiber. In general, various vegetables and fruits, legumes, and whole grains and products made from them should be on the menu – in addition to those mentioned, also e.g. salsify, artichokes, broad beans, soybeans and chickpeas, whole grain bread and pasta, as well as nuts and seeds.

5. What effect can dietary fibers have in the body?

In general, a higher fiber intake is associated with a lower mortality risk and reduces the risk of cardiovascular, cancer, and metabolic diseases. They do not provide an energy boost, as they are mostly indigestible. And a direct link to improved eyesight cannot be found either – we made that up.
